When drugs which dilate the pupil are intentionally or accidentally instilled into the eye, the large mydriatic pupil reacts poorly to light and the near reflex. The commonest topical dilating medications used in clinical practice are the atropine-like drops tropicamide and cyclopentolate, the former being the shortest acting.
