This is a benign triangular fibrovascular conjunctival growth, usually situated on the nasal side.  Much commoner in hot climates, pterygia are thought to be secondary to ultraviolet light exposure.  Although slow to enlarge, the lesions can extend across the limbus onto the cornea.
